Manager's Corner

Greetings,

The holiday season is upon us and it’s important to remember to be thankful for everything that we have, from our loved ones to our health. These have been strange times to live through, and I wanted to thank all of you for taking this pandemic seriously by helping keep yourselves and those around you healthy. I know this has been a difficult time for all as we are accustomed to such an active community and spending time with friends. The streets of our community replaced the shows, game nights, and dinners, but somehow this pandemic drew us closer as a community. You reached out to those in need, both in the community and out, by showing others that you care. You never lost the spirit of The Highlands and what it means to be a member of the finest retirement community in the state of Florida.  Now that things are easing back to some sense of normalcy, it’s exciting to see people get back together in small groups at the clubhouse and enjoying the things that make The Highlands such a wonderful place to live.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Sales Update

Bag of money graphic

The Highlands sales team has been busier than ever helping residents buy and sell homes in the community!

The new section at the Highlands at Scotland Yards is going great. This brand new construction of Palm Harbor homes, with incredible views of the rolling hills and golf course, has 7 different floor plans to choose from. The model homes are complete and ready to take a look at by appointment.

I wanted to also bring to your attention that we just started a lease option program that’s sure to be a big hit with some of our new homes. If you are interested, give the sales office a call and I will fill you in on all the details.

If you are considering selling your home, we hope you consider listing with us! We are the resale listing authority because potential buyers come to us first and we employ the right kinds of media to sell your home. We understand the lifestyle and fees and we are invested in getting you more for your home than outside realtors.

I would also like to remind all residents that there is an awesome referral fee of $1,000 paid to any resident that brings in a new customer who buys a new home. This is a chance to let your friends in on how wonderful it is to live here at the Highlands. Not to mention, you too can enjoy a brand-new home with our Trade-In, Trade-Up program. Feel free to give us a call to discuss the possibilities!

Please join me in welcoming all of our newest residents to The Highlands. More and more folks are moving in and even more are coming. The Highlands at Scotland Yards truly has so much to offer!

Thank you for the warm smiles and waves,
Edgar Anderson

The Sunshine Committee has been doing lots, both within and outside the community, to spread joy to others. Both the Edwinola Nursing Home and Meals on Wheels, to name a few, have received the committee’s homemade butterfly cards and are very appreciative of these ladies’ kind gestures.

Along with spreading cheer through their cards, they have also adorned the clubhouse with festive autumn décor. If you get a chance to stop by, make sure to check out all their hard work!

American Indian Heritage Month

National Native American Heritage Month

November marks the 30th anniversary of National America Indian Heritage Month, put into action from only a week of recognition by President Bush in August of 1990. Keep reading to learn more about the history of this celebratory month.

American Indian Heritage Month

National Native American Heritage Month

In response to an effort by many to gain a day of recognition for the great influence American Indians have had upon the U.S., Congress designated a week of October to celebrate Native American Awareness Week in 1976. Yearly legislation was enacted to continue the tradition until August of 1990, when President Bush approved the designation of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Each year a similar proclamation is issued. President Clinton noted in 1996, "Throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all odds, America’s first peoples have endured, and they remain a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence." November is an appropriate month for the celebration because it is traditionally a time when many American Indians hold fall harvest and world-renewal ceremonies, powwows, dances, and various feasts. The holiday recognizes hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages, and celebrates the history, tradition, and values of American Indians. National American Indian Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the positive effect native peoples have had on the cultural development and growth of the U.S., as well as the struggles and challenges they have faced.

New Year, New Travel

Closeup of map

While this year might have put a damper on our travel plans, believe it or not, many experts are optimistic that 2021 will bring a rebound to the travel industry. According to Forbes, Americans want to travel, feel confident traveling, and plan to as early in the new year as possible.

There are a few reasons why the travel industry is seeing such enthusiastic responses. Many people received travel vouchers in 2020 for cancelled trips that must be used within a year, some have racked up vacation days at work during quarantine, and even more are simply itching to get out and visit somewhere new as travel restrictions lift and safety measures are put in place.

While we all anxiously wait to break out our suitcases, plan your first trip with the help of Afar’s “most requested” travel guide. American’s are especially excited to visit Japan, the top searched location according to Afar’s guide, along with Italy, Greece, Ireland, and Egypt.

Which of these locations do you want to get out and see? We can’t decide!
